News - about Clients, Colleagues, and Me

NY Center approved for four 21st Century Learning Center Sites Good news arrived recently. The NY Center for Interpersonal Development was awarded a contract for four Community Learning Centers on Staten Island. Many people worked on putting the proposal together. The school principals, Region 7 staff, parents groups, and, of course, NY Center staff. Four schools, one region, several community resources - a true collaboration.

The funding will make it possible for the program at PS 57 to stay open. The program there serves 4th and 5th graders from Stapleton and Park Hill. At McKee and Curtis High Schools we'll focus on giving freshmen a strong start. And at Immaculate Conception we open a new after school program for their 6th, 7th and 8th graders.

New website launches. Ruth Wahtera and Glenn Packert kicked off a new site - The Skinny on Wood Stoves - this winter. The site grew out of many on-going discussions about whether to install a wood stove, what kind, how big, and a variety of other late night ramblings coupled with the frustration that ensued whenever they built a fire in the fireplace. The whole house cooled down.

Couple those discussions with a lot of research and we decided we should share what we learned.

You can visit the site and read about our adventures exploring wood stoves and benefit from our many hours of research.

TRAC Center receives OCFS funding. Family Service's teen center in Poughkeepsie will stay open thanks to four year funding from the NYS Office of Children and Family Services.

The TRAC Center serves as a home-away-from-home for at-risk adolescents in the City of Poughkeepsie. Many of them spend most of their out-of-school hours there. The staff wprovides homework help, conflict resolution skills, mentoring and coaching - both the sports and youth development kind.

The Art of Grant Writing

I write a lot of grant proposals for non-profits and approach it in much the same way I develop other direct response packages.

When I sit down to write I develop a vivid picture of the proposal evaluators.

(I imagine them surrounded by foot high stacks of boring, bureaucratic proposals.)

I know your proposal needs to stand out.

It must be easy to read.

It has to capture their imagination while answering all their questions.

It's not always easy within the confines of a request for proposal. The funders often define the structure of the response pretty closely.

My style isn't typical of most grant writers, but it works.

I've raised more that $5M for my clients in less than two years, so my clients are pleased.

If you'd like to talk with me about writing proposals for you, or teaching your staff my approach, give me a call or send me an e-mail.
